Augmentin DDS Syrup is a broad-spectrum antibiotic medicine used for the treatment of bacterial infections in children. It contains a combination of Amoxycillin (a penicillin-type antibiotic) and Clavulanic acid (a beta-lactamase inhibitor). This combination enhances the effectiveness of the antibiotic by overcoming bacterial resistance.
Uses
- Treating Bacterial Infections
Benefits of Augmentin DDS Syrup
- Treats a wide range of bacterial infections in children, including:
- Respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia)
- Ear infections (e.g., otitis media)
- Sinusitis
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Dental infections (e.g., dental abscesses)
- Broad-spectrum activity: Effective against both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria
- Faster relief of symptoms due to the enhanced antibacterial action
- Prevents bacterial resistance with the help of Clavulanic acid
How Augmentin DDS Syrup works
Augmentin DDS Syrup is a combination of two active ingredients: Amoxycillin and Clavulanic acid. Amoxycillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that works by inhibiting the formation of the bacterial cell wall, which is essential for the bacteria’s survival. Without a functional cell wall, the bacteria are unable to grow or multiply, leading to their death. However, some bacteria produce an enzyme called beta-lactamase, which can break down amoxycillin and make it ineffective. This is where Clavulanic acid plays a crucial role. It blocks the action of the beta-lactamase enzyme, thereby protecting amoxycillin from being destroyed. This combined action ensures that the antibiotic remains effective even against resistant strains of bacteria, leading to more successful treatment of infections.
